Robert Burns
Address to Edinburgh, 1787

Burns visited Edinburgh in 1787-88, and was lionised by many of the leaders of literature and society, including Professor Dugald Stewart and Principal William Robertson. The "Address to Edinburgh" is in Burns' own hand, and dated in a different hand. It came to the Library with the large and important collection of manuscripts bequeathed to the University by David Laing in 1878.

An Inquiry into the Principles of Political OEconomy, by Sir James Steuart (2 vols, London, 1767)

Although now overshadowed by Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" (1776), Steuart's "Inquiry" was one of the foundation economic texts of the Scottish Enlightenment. It was either purchased by the Library on publication or acquired on legal deposit, and complements the Coltness papers, which were gifted to the Library in 1988 by Mrs Katherine Fyfe.
