Album amicorum of Michael van Meer, 1614-1630

A personal album of autographs and water-colour sketches of contemporary scenes, allegorical emblems and heraldic devices by friends and relatives, this MS volume came to the Library as part of the Laing Bequest in 1878. It provides a sought-after source of C17 illustration.

Portolano charts

Between the 14th and early 17th centuries, portolano (or pilot-book) charts provided the main navigational aids between the seaports of the world. By networks of lines indicating the direction of one port from another, navigators were able to set the necessary courses. Now they are admired as much for their decorations as their historical information
These charts are drawn
by Franciscus Oliva, one of a well-known family of Italian map-makers, in
Marseille in 1650, and were gifted to the Library in 1690 by Baillie Thomas Young of Edinburgh.

Historia Rerum Britannicarum, by Robert Johnston (Amsterdam, 1655)

This work was written by one of the College of Edinburgh's first graduates, and was published, complete with printed encomium and his name mis-spelled, after his death.

Theatrum scotiae, by John Slezar (London, 1693)

"Theatrum Scotiae" is a monumental set of engravings of Scottish cities, with texts by Sir Robert Sibbald, which are still regarded as
primary historical sources. A former captain of artillery, Slezar presented a copy of his work to the Library
in 1695 on behalf of his sons John and Archibald, who had been students at
the College.

From the Halliwell-Phillipps Shakespeare Collection, this copy of "A midsomer night's dreame" has been extracted from a First Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays and annotated with cuts and additions as a prompt copy for a theatre production.
